Night Birds Want to Know Who Killed Mike Hunchback
It was 2010 when New Jersey’s Night Birds entered our world with their debut 7", crossing the vibe of classic Jersey wisenheimer-core like Adrenalin O.D. with the kind of snotty sounds that would have washed up on the shores of Huntington Beach in 1981. Ever since then, we’ve been enthralled. They’ve accelerated at a brow-bending pace, touring the world over and releasing enough vinyl to choke a thick-necked, Jersey Shore-dwelling chooch.
To get a closer understanding of what got the Birds from there to now, their label Fat Wreck Chords is serving up Who Killed Mike Hunchback?, a six-song 7" EP consisting of demo takes of early songs written by their former guitarist, Mike Hunchback. Night Birds vocalist Brian Gorsegner has this to say about the collection:
“Mike Hunchback is a goddamned weirdo, and I mean that in the absolute best possible way. He wrote some really great tunes during his time as a Bird, but 'Born of Man and Woman' takes the cake, and I've wanted to release this version ever since the first time I heard it. I like it more than the album version. It's kind of like how people say the version of 'My War' on Black Flag's 1982 Demos is better than the version on the actual My War album. OK, so maybe this isn’t QUITE as essential as one of the best punk albums of all time, but it’s PRETTY damn close."
Check out an exclusive stream of the EP below, and be sure to pre-order that shit since there will only be 1,500 of them for the taking. And don’t forget about the string of dates the Night Birds will be playing with the Descendents starting October 6. Dates are below.
