Downtown Boys have proven to be one the most poignant modern punk bands around. Today they dropped a new single, "Somos Chulas," a song that's firmly rooted in punk and isn't afraid to get weird. The bilingual band chooses Spanish for the track, singer Victoria Ruiz sounding tough and in control. They released an explanation of the track on Facebook, stating, "The chorus — 'Somos chulas, no somos pendejas!' or, in English, 'I’m elegant / intelligent, I’m not dumb!' — is a declaration of one’s ability to decolonize one’s mind, and the importance of fearlessly unlearning the ways white supremacy conditions people to think and exist." The message is even more poignant sung in Spanish, a mark of a new step in the band's career on Sub Pop.
