It's been a little over a year since Michelle Zauner released Psychopomp, her stunning full-length debut as Japanese Breakfast. Since then, she's toured with the likes of Jay Som, Mitski and, currently, Slowdive. Today, Zauner has announced the next Japanese Breakfast LP, Soft Sounds From Another Planet. Co-produced by Craig Hendrix (Little Big League) and mixed by Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Tamaryn), the sprawling, 10-track album arrives July 14 via Dead Oceans, and was heavily inspired by science fiction, according to a press release. "I used the theme as a means to disassociate from trauma," Zauner explains. "Space used as a place of fantasy."

Fantasy certainly informs Zauner's self-directed new clip for "The Machinist," the album's synth-powered first single. Created alongside House of Nod's Adam Kolodny, the video tells the story of a woman who falls in love with a robot. In an attempt to build said robot lover a body, she trips out on rocket fuel and deconstructs her whole ship. It's a bold plan, but will it work? Find out below, and scroll down to view Zauner's upcoming tour dates.
