A fair warning to the ghosted, dumped or dejected: Angel Olsen's new album, My Woman, will absolutely crush you. The rocksmith has always peddled in hymnals for the lovesick — and by "lovesick," I mean those poor souls who text novels and write songs to win back exes; who react to infidelity by taking a week's nap; who feel the butterflies in every milligram of marrow. But while Olsen's third album easily stands as her most devastating (and best) work to date, it's her most uplifting, as well — and not just because main single "Shut Up Kiss Me" is a blistering beacon of a torch song (although her demands on the chorus epitomize the album's acrid, aggressive concept of vulnerability). In press releases, Olsen has referred to the new LP as a work rooted in the feminine, but its gritty arrangements and unflinching ballads transcend gender. After all, what's more universal than heartbreak, and the songs concerning it?

Anyway, enough of my bellyaching. Stream My Woman below. It's great. Just don't listen to it while looking at pictures of your ex.

MY WOMAN is out now via Jagjaguwar.
