Tiny Moving Parts’ ‘Common Cold’ Is Infectious

Tiny Moving Parts are a poppy post-hardcore band out of Benson, Minn., that have been playing since 2010. They recently released their third (and possibly best) record to date in the form of Celebrate, a catchy and intense affair that's one of the genre's top listens this year. Recently, TMP put out a new video for one of the record's most engaging cuts, "Common Cold." The band plays in a house that's getting weird: lamps multiply, things move on the walls, people move in and out. They're joined by good pal Conor Murphy from Foxing, who shows up in both the video and song. The tune is huge, singer Dylan Mattheisen putting everything he can into his vocals, instruments jumping between soft and heavy. It's a great representation of what Celebrate is all about, and why TMP rule.

What was on the first mix you made for a crush?
Taking Back Sunday's Tell All Your Friends, whole album. We would listen to it on countless car rides together. I still jam that record from time to time; it’s a 10/10 classic!

Thoughts on PDA at a gig?
If a couple starts getting a little too lovey-dovey, it’ll more than likely make the people around them feel uncomfortable. I just want everyone who comes out to the shows to be happy and comfortable. Be respectable and try not make things awkward.

Does music taste matter in a relationship?
I don’t think so, but that’s totally my opinion. Every human is different! As long as you and your partner are truly happy together [and] love each other’s company, that’s what matters.

What musician would you want to make out with most (dead or alive)?
[Laughs] Oh gosh, I have no idea. Sorry!

Have you ever cried while listening to a song? If so, what was the last time?
I remember tearing up to “The Only Moment We Were Alone” by Explosions in the Sky. I was in college, laying in bed, pretty drunk, and felt confused about what was going on in my life. It’s an instrumental song, which is cool how there were no words that made me feel the way I did. The timing was perfect!

Have you ever had to talk to somebody about a song you’ve written about them?
Yes I have. When it comes to lyrics, I mainly write about personal things that have happened in my life. I make sure it can be relatable to others, so we all can feel connected on a certain level. Hearing people sing along to our songs live is a special feeling that will never get old.

What musician knows the most about love?
Not Bret Michaels. I watched his Rock of Love TV show last week on Hulu, and he seems to be having trouble finding his soulmate. Poor Bret.

Do you like love songs or hate songs more?
They're both great! I love all sorts of songs. Music is a wonderful thing!
