Making Movies are a quartet from Kansas City, Mo., that plays deft folk rock with a strong Latin influence. The creative nexus of the group is the brotherly duo of Enrique and Diego Chi, who grew up in Panama. Raised on a musical diet of salsa, cumbia and merengue, they later moved to the States and met percussionist Juan-Carlos Chaurand and drummer Brendan Culp, sowing the seeds for the band’s 2009 inception, manifested musically and even civically: Since 2012, Making Movies have helmed Musicians United by Social Influence and Cultural Awareness (M.U.S.I.C.A.)., a summer music camp for low-income immigrant youth in Kansas City that recently blossomed into a full-blown nonprofit.

Three years after their debut album, A La Deriva, Making Movies are set to return with I Am Another You, their self-released, crowd-funded sophomore LP, produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin. Though the band’s thesis (“We are all immigrants”) remains the same, their execution has grown all the more potent and pointed, because what else can you do in the age of Trump but put up your dukes and fight? It’s not just Making Movies in the arena, either — the quartet is joined by Ozomatli, Tennis and Hurray for the Riff Raff on the new LP. The latter two artists guest on "Brave Enough," the album’s first single, which we’re premiering today. Give it a spin below, and scroll down to view I Am Another You’s artwork and track list, plus the band’s upcoming tour dates.

Here’s a lowdown on “Brave Enough” from Enrique Chi:

The duet was born out of a kinship with Alynda [Segarra, Hurray for the Riff Raff] based on our obsession with ’60s-era FANIA Records tracks. Those old recordings were trying to compete with the energy of rock and roll, and were inventing hybrid genres like boogaloo in attempt to appeal to the Latino kids of that era. I guess that’s not that different from what is happening today — the civil rights issues, the social epidemics. Time seems to repeat itself. The song needed a classic doo-wop vocal on the chorus, and we knew that our friend Alaina [Moore, Tennis] would be a perfect fit.

Making Movies will self-release I Am Another You on May 26. Pre-order the album here.
