Five years and two albums in, LVL UP have finally, well, leveled up. The gauzy, grungy outfit — which is comprised of guitarists (and Double Double Whammy label co-founders) Mike Caridi and Dave Benton, bassist Nick Corbo and drummer Greg Rutkin — recently signed to the almighty Sub Pop for their new album Return to Love, the latest milestone in their steady progression from a college DIY project to kings of upstate New York's indie scene ... and now, the whole scene.

A crisp, kinetic jewel of a record, Return to Love finds the quartet in a mystical mood, framing their lithe psych-pop ditties as otherworldly ruminations. Now, two weeks in advance of the record's release, the band has shared "Spirit Was," a brittle, bass-heavy reflection on life, death, God, science and the uncanny spaces in between. The twisted narrative begins with, "I’m at a wake and drawing a geometric shape," and only gets weirder from there; by song's end, the band has scribbled perfect circles, talked to flowers and gazed through rings of fire. Most importantly, they've ensnared listeners like you and me.

Return to Love arrives September 23 via Sub Pop. Check out the band's full tour itinerary below.
