Goat Girl are a post-punk quartet from London that spent years building up a strong local following before signing to the storied Rough Trade — so who the hell do a bunch of city-dwelling Brits think they are, calling the A-side to their forthcoming debut 7" "Country Sleaze"? What even constitutes "country sleaze" in the United Kingdom, anyway? Has this foursome ever ventured into one of those backroads strip joints advertised on the billboards festooning I-95? (Now that's country sleaze — at least the chicken-fried steak is cheap.)

But let's not get distracted by semantics; there's a reason why Goat Girl are garnering such a buzz across the pond, and it's got nothing to do with rural living or debauched intent. You see, Clottie Cream, Rosy Bones, Naima Jelly and L.E.D. (yes, those are the members' names) make a racket closer to minimalist post-punk than twangy alt-country. Between the deadpan vocals, unwound tempos and heavy-lidded riffs, "Country Sleaze" could easily pass as a just-unearthed Raincoats cut, with a grungy undercurrent for extra gravitas. It's not very country, but it's certainly sleazy — not to mention good.

Goat Girl will release their debut 7" via Rough Trade on October 7. Later this month, the band will take the release on the road for a European tour, opening for Yak and Parquet Courts on select dates.
