Animal Collective Have Always Been ‘Kinda Bonkers’

You never know what you're going to get with a new release from Animal Collective. At their best, the band taps into a kind of mad genius vibe; at other times, they get so wrapped up in ridiculousness, they're borderline unlistenable. Today, they released a new song that's probably in the middle of those two extremes: "Kinda Bonkers," off their upcoming EP, The Painters, due Friday via Domino. More so than previous efforts, the song features a heavy Eastern influence in its instrumentation, imbued by a kind of otherworldly bounce. It's chorus of "kinda bonkers, pretty bonkers" sounds more like a chant than anything sung.
